A deep thought struck me today as I was working on an assignment for Professor Harbort (which is huge for this doesn‘t happen often to me). haha
We’re reading The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, and we were assigned to read page 198, entitled Letter of Criticism. Henri states this, “… you will have a rough road to travel with your public. Where others are clever and precise you are not. Where you are clever and precise, others are not.” After reading this passage along with some more that followed, I knew there was a deeper meaning than what was just being read.
Here’s what I’ve come to as my own conclusion, what you do with it is up to you.
We will encounter criticism our whole life, especially in some career more than others. For my career this is a great part of becoming better.
If you’ve ever received a criticism that kicked your ass… that’s good it means you are listening. But that’s step one, step two is what you are going to do with this criticism. One; let it piss you off and continue on with you’re way of “right” and their “wrong” , making this experience your loss. Or two; be open to the different point of view and kick yourself in the ass again, for becoming a slacker and not realizing or seeing what was just pointed out, before hand. Make this a rebirth of your direction in your career a reboot, or another chapter to start toward. Meet the standards the criticizer has set and show you are made of what they see in you. After this is accomplished; level complete, you may proceed.
